Inspire Innovation. Shoot Your Employees Out of Cannons

February 9, 2010

To get to the main part of the video, fast forward to 1:15

How do you get your employees fired up about working for your company?

Give them time to do what they love that’s not necessarily “work related.” Google is a pioneer in this concept, giving their employees around 20% of their time to work on whatever they want. Many innovations for Google products have come out of this designated “free time” (i.e. Google Wave). However, some corporations stray from product innovations and come up with random bits like seen in the video above.

In Finland, a few Intel employees thought it would be cool to re-create that famous Intel chime…by shooting themselves out of cannons into large bells. This innovative idea isn’t one that is likely to spawn a product down the road. However, it gave Intel employees a chance to have fun and stretch their creativity to other channels. Allowing your employees to have fun at work releases tensions from the normal day-to-day stress and to really enjoy their time with your company. If you aren’t having fun, what’s the point of showing up day-to-day for years on end?

How are you inspiring fun innovation?

I love it when an idea really “takes off”.

It is amazing of what can come out of a little creativity mixed in with a little fun.
